The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) said on Thursday that it is launching an investigation into Boston’s housing policies, looking at whether their focus on affordable housing for communities of color discriminated against low-income white people.

In a letter addressed to Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, a 40-year-old Democrat, the Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, Craig W. Trainor, said that "no person or entity—the City of Boston included—is permitted to violate civil rights protections in the name of ‘Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion’ (DEI)."
