New government data tabled in the Lok Sabha shows a clear shift in the educational backgrounds of candidates recommended for the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) between 2019 and 2023.
While engineering graduates continue to account for the largest share of selections, their dominance has weakened, even as the humanities stream has posted an impressive surge.
According to Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh, the number of humanities graduates recommended for the civil services has risen sharply by 65%, growing from 223 candidates in 2019 to 368 in 2023.
The most notable jump occurred in 2022, when 296 humanities candidates made it to the final list, marking a clear shift in preference and performance.
