Taylor Swift delivered the kind of speech on the final night of the Eras Tour that usually comes right before the climax of a football game in a cinematic blockbuster. It was a rallying cry before the lights went down for the last time, when the journey, the risk and the belief snapped into focus, and the team realized it had already won.
"I wanna say we have done something that no one has ever done," Swift told the group. "We have performed for over 10 million people in person."
The speech opens the first episode of Swift's six-part Eras Tour docuseries on Disney+, which dropped Dec. 12 alongside the concert film, "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour | The Final Show." Released simultaneously, the projects frame the record-shattering two-year tour captured in real time from the beginning rehearsals and concepts through the last bow.
"Every single one of us has picked professions that categorically, people, for the majority of the time, they tell you shouldn’t do it," she said. "You have to love the thing so much you override 85 to 95% of the advice you are given along the way."
Before every performance, Swift gathered her band, dancers and crew into a huddle. Different members took turns pumping up the team. On this night in Vancouver, as thousands of fans clamored outside BC Place waiting for the final show to begin, the ringleader in a bedazzled jumpsuit took the reins herself, delivering a 3-minute monologue that captured the weight, the risk and the triumph of everything they had just survived together.
She acknowledged rejection as part of the journey: the auditions that didn’t work out, the jobs that went to someone else, the doors that closed before others finally opened.
Rather than framing the Eras Tour as a phenomenon that magically fell into place, Swift acknowledged the hard work, dedication and arduous journey of her team.
"When I'm thinking about the people that are in this circle, I don't think about it as pieces that fell into place," she said. "I think of each of you as like tectonic plates on the earth that took millions of micro decisions and forces of you pushing and pushing inch by inch closer together."
Outside the stadium, fans cheered loudly, eager for one final night of shared catharsis.
"It is our job to make this look accidental and it is our job to make this look effortless," she said. "But I just want every single one of you to know that I, in no way, shape or form, look at this as the pieces just falling into place. You put the pieces where they are."
Then came the final charge.
"This is the biggest challenge any of us have ever done," Swift said. "Tonight, we complete that challenge."
