In a vote that drew cheers and applause from those in the chamber, Savannah City Council voted unanimously Thursday to approve a measure to significantly limit hotel development in three historic neighborhoods south of downtown.
The measure was an extension of the Hotel Development Overlay, which initially regulated the size and location of hotels in the National Historic Landmark District, to the Victorian, Thomas Square and Cuyler-Brownville neighborhoods. The proposal was a citizen-led petition that resulted in a packed city council chambers Thursday, where nearly 15 residents lined up for public comment in addition to nearly 200 emailed support letters.
