A walk through an alleyway off Longmont’s Main Street reveals some disco-themed whimsy.
Since September, an alleyway running north and south between Main and Kimbark streets has been home to seven murals featuring playful, disco-themed art. The designs vary widely, from a sunglasses-wearing baby and music-playing raccoons to more abstract imagery that plays with shapes.
While the “Disco Dumpster” installation arose out of a detail in the city’s new ordinance on recycling and compost, it also gave local artists a chance to put their art in a bit of an unexpected place: the enclosure for a trash receptacle.
For Taty Grechina, a Longmont artist and new mom, the project was a reminder of the importance of public art.
