RAICHUR: The theft of coal, also known as ‘black gold’, has been rampant in Raichur. A small portion of coal meant for the Raichur thermal power station (RTPS) at Yermarus is being pilfered by contractors routinely and at least 35-40 tons of coal is being stolen from a rake’s 58 wagons.

With 3-4 rakes arriving daily, around 150 tons of coal is being siphoned off every day. The contractors, who have secured tenders for cleaning coal waste, are selling good quality coal to other factories and industries. Coal is being stored in large quantities near the railway station and transported via lorries and tractors.
