President Donald Trump is calling on Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) to eliminate a century-old tradition — but the GOP leader appears unwilling to budge.
Trump continued his criticism on Thursday of the Senate’s “blue slip” practice, a custom that has given home-state senators a say in approving or rejecting district court and U.S. attorney nominees since at least 1917 .
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the tradition, used by the Senate Judiciary Committee, has prevented the appointment of “great” Republican nominees in a state with just one Democratic senator. He also singled out Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the chair of committee, and other Republicans who “allow this scam to continue.”
