It wasn’t what young Jacob Fowler did that made his debut in Pittsburgh so impressive.
It was what he didn’t do.
He didn’t flail at the puck like a man fighting mosquitoes at a backyard barbecue. He didn’t kick out big, juicy rebounds that the most inept beer-league winger could bury. He didn’t push off across the crease so hard he started in Montreal and ended up in Moncton.
Most of all, he didn’t fail to stop floaters from the blue line when he had a clear view of the puck.
And along the way, Fowler did make a bunch of quality saves , stopping (after an NHL correction) 36 of the 38 shots he faced for a .947 save percentage and (according to Brian Wilde) a +3.15 in goals saved above expected in a 4-2 road win over the Penguins.
