Construction has begun on a six-storey apartment building on land next to Lambton Mall in Sarnia.

The 58-apartment building at 1450 London Rd., is being constructed by Southside Group and is the first of several buildings planned for the site, said Vito Frijia, president of the London-based company.

“We’ll build it in phases,” he said. “We’ll put up one building and then if the leasing goes well, we’ll do a second building.”

Planning approval was given by the city in 2022 for a project to create four six-storey apartment buildings on the 2.4-hectare (5.9-acre) site.

“The design is for four apartment buildings with a four-level parking garage in the centre,” Frijia said.
