The Met Office has issued a 36-hour weather warning for an area of North West England as heavy rain is set to batter parts of the UK this weekend.

The forecaster predicts rain will persist through the weekend and into the start of next week, and in certain areas including Cumbria, there will be more than 200mm rainfall accumulating within 48 hours. More widely, totals of 40-70mm are likely, with over 100mm on higher ground of western Britain and up to 50mm possible over higher ground in Northern Ireland, according to the UK weather agency.

An amber weather warning for rain is in place across Cumbria from 6am on Sunday (December 14), remaining in place until 6pm on Monday. And a yellow rain warning is in place in Greater Manchester from 6pm on Saturday until 6pm on Mond
