GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Mel Trotter Ministries (MTM) declared a "Code Blue" emergency on Friday afternoon as dangerously cold weather is set to move into the region this weekend.
The Code Blue is set to start at 6 p.m. on Dec. 12 and run through at least Monday, Dec. 15.
Code Blue operations are initiated by MTM when the outside temperature drops below 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
During these extreme conditions, MTM will open its overflow capacity space at its main shelter at 225 Commerce SW in Grand Rapids to allow for more people to have a warm place to sleep at night.
There will also be an overflow space opened in the MTM Day Center.
Members of the MTM outreach team will increase patrols throughout Grand Rapids this weekend to search for people living on the street who may need shelter fr
