DULUTH — Police responded to a report of dynamite found in the basement of the Howard Friese residence near North 15th Avenue around 8:40 a.m. Friday.

The house, which serves as a residence for men seeking treatment for substance abuse, was evacuated, and all clients moved to a different location, according to a news release from the Duluth Police Department.

"The bomb squad determined it wasn’t dynamite but more so had an explosive-type compound inside it that’s used in commercial-grade fireworks," the department clarified in a second news release. It was not clear how the bag of explosives came to be in the basement of the residence.

The affected Howard Friese clients were able to return to the home as of 1 p.m.
