U.S. Senator Katie Britt urged graduates Friday to embrace being “lifelong learners” and to respect differing viewpoints, highlighting bipartisanship as the key to legislative accomplishments, including ending the government shutdown.

“Some of my biggest successes for the State of Alabama and this country in the U.S. Senate have been with people I don’t agree with on a number of things,” Britt said during her 18-minute commencement speech at the University of South Alabama’s fall graduation ceremony inside the Mitchell Center.

“Building relationships on trust and respect allows us to have tough conversations and move the needle in a positive way for the people we serve,” she said.
