Over 100 people packed the hallways of the Texas Comptroller’s Audit Office in McAllen to see if the state was holding on to money that belonged to them.

As previously reported, the state comptroller’s office said they’re holding on to more than $10 billion in unclaimed money, with $125 million belonging to people in Cameron and Hidalgo counties.

A Thursday event invited the public to see if they had any money to claim.

Esther Mata De La Garza said she didn’t find money with her name on it, but she did find money that belonged to her family.

“What matters is that one of us got blessed, and that’s what’s important,” De La Garza said.

De La Garza drove from Alton to help her sister and brother-in-law check their names and claim over $500, making new friends along the way to the office.
