ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland’s attorney general has joined a 19-state lawsuit against the President Donald Trump administration's policy of charging a $100,000 fee for new H-1B visa petitions .

The lawsuit was filed two days after Canada launched a $1.7 billion effort to attract global talent.

These visas have long been employed to import highly skilled workers from other countries.

Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown said the new fee would “create a costly barrier for employers, especially public sector, and government employers, trying to fill these positions.”

Trump previously encountered resistance to challenges to H-1B visas within his own circle, when tech leaders like Elon Musk said importing foreign talent helped their industries.
