DALLAS — The latest attempt to lower property taxes in Texas is known as “Operation Double Nickel.”

Introduced by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, the proposal would lower the age at which Texans could enjoy senior property tax exemptions from 65 to 55. That would give a 55-year-old homeowner an extra decade to benefit from frozen values, and they’d no longer have to worry about appraisals.

Operation Double Nickel would also increase the ISD homestead exemption another $40,000. A homestead exemption is the amount of a home’s value that can’t be taxed to pay for public schools.

Combined with previously passed legislation, that means all homeowners would see their homestead exemption jump from $140,000 to $180,000, while the senior exemption would grow from $200,000 to $240,000. And again, that wou
