(CNN)– Lottery jackpots keep getting bigger.

Saturday, Dec. 13’s Powerball jackpot is worth an estimated $1 billion.

It will be the 14th-ever top U.S. lottery prize of at least a billion.

In the last five years, it’s happened 12 times.

One reason is ticket prices have increased.

Another reason is that lotteries have made the odds of winning a jackpot steeper.

Finally, a lot more states participate in the lottery than in years past.
