BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - A couple of fire departments along the Coast are preparing for potential cold-weather emergencies as extremely cold temperatures are forecast to move into the region.

The Gulfport and Biloxi Fire Departments said they are ready to respond to emergencies, but officials are warning residents about the dangers of improper space heater use, a common cause of fires during cold weather.

“Our guys are always prepared to respond at a moment’s notice,” Biloxi Assistant Fire Chief Wes Small said.

Small said residents should avoid overloading extension cords and surge protectors when using space heaters.

“When you have too many things plugged into the same surge protector, it’s too much demand on that surge protector, and that can cause that to overheat as well,” Small said
