Los Angeles County officials announced charges against five individuals for alleged unlicensed contracting following the devastating Eaton Fire, according to news reports , and warned Californians about the risks of working with unlicensed contractors.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced the charges on Thursday, Dec. 11.

Among the risks people face when working with an unlicensed contractor is that they aren’t insured, Hochman said at a news conference Thursday. If someone gets injured on your property, you’re at risk for being sued, Hochman said — it’s not the responsibility an unlicensed contractor.

“Problems caused by unlicensed work may not be visible right away,” Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger said during the news conference.
