We’re off to a cold and snowy winter. And wouldn’t a hummingbird be feeding at a residence in Wyoming. The homeowners are Gerry and Joyce Ignatz, a wonderful couple we have known for decades.

The hummingbird has been coming to a sugar water feeder up to this writing — even surviving the very cold night of Dec. 4. One would assume that this hummingbird would be our one and only eastern North American hummingbird species we all know as the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. But it turns out that this bird is not. This is an immature Rufous Hummingbird — normal range in the western United States — which apparently took a wrong turn in its intended southern migration and made its way east.
