In Quaker tradition, Christian holidays like Christmas and Easter are to be viewed the same as all other days. Earlier members of the Religious Society of Friends believed that every day was an opportunity to celebrate God’s presence in their lives.
In current times, many Friends do celebrate Christmas. Amesbury Friends Meeting hangs wreaths on the front doors of our historic Meetinghouse. On the Sunday before Christmas, we have the single “programmed” worship service of the year by holding a traditional Ceremony of Lessons and Carols – albeit with worshipful silence between each lesson and carol. We follow the service with a festive potluck lunch.
