A lot of Seinfeld -inspired sitcoms about comedians skip their path to success, but HBO’s Crashing goes back to show the struggles of starting out. Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David revolutionized the sitcom with Seinfeld . They instituted a “ no hugging, no learning ” policy to focus solely on the laughs, and they pioneered a technique of dovetailing storylines into ironic twist endings.

But more specifically, Seinfeld gave every comedian in the world a perfect roadmap to a TV career. Playing a fictionalized version of themselves would accommodate for their limited acting ability, lean into their on-stage persona, and promote their standup. Lots of comedians have followed in Seinfeld ’s footsteps , but they haven’t all been worthy successors to an old classic.
