Two of my favorite house plants have gotten quite large. How can I tell when it is time to move them to larger pots? How do I select the best potting soil and fertilizer?
Your frequency of watering is probably the best indicator of when it is time to shift plants to a larger pot. If a plant needs to be watered every day or two to keep it from wilting, it is probably time to move it to a larger pot. Choose pots that are just an inch or two larger when moving plants to larger pots.
The most important quality of potting soil is drainage. Water should not stay on top of the soil for more than a minute before it moves into the soil. All of the better potting soils have quick drainage. Many of the potting soils contain slow-release fertilizer. There may be enough to last for several weeks.
