Alberta and Ottawa have reached an extended one-year childcare agreement after being one of two provinces to hold out on signing extensions in March.

Under the new deal, Alberta will receive $1.17 billion in federal funding for the program for 2026-2027. The extension would maintain the current $15-a-day parent fee in place beyond next March 31.

In an interview with Postmedia, Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said the one-year extension will serve as a buffer year while allowing the federal and provincial governments to negotiate a long-term agreement.
