A woman has died and a man was taken into custody after an incident in Richfield early Saturday.

Richfield Police Department says it received "numerous" 911 calls from residents of an apartment building at 7601 Knox Avenue South, who reported at 3:10 a.m. a man "dragging a dead body" out of an apartment and loading it into a vehicle.

A Richfield police officer attempted a traffic stop, but the driver led police on a brief pursuit that ultimately ended at the emergency room entrance of Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina.

The man exited the vehicle, with police finding an unconscious woman in the back seat suffering from a gunshot wound.

"Despite lifesaving efforts, the 23-year-old female died from her injuries. The adult male driver was taken into custody," Richfield PD said.
