The NDA claimed crown jewel Thiruvananthapuram Corporation in local body elections in Kerala that swept back Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) to power in most self-government bodies in a stunning reversal of electoral fortunes, while delivering a massive jolt to ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF).

The NDA was only a seat short of securing power in Thiruvananthapuram, a pocket borough of LDF for more than four decades, in an electoral exercise widely considered a semi-final before Assembly elections due in 3-4 months. Observers say this is a strong disapproval of Pinarayi Vijayan-led government in its rare second term.
