The pilot episode of a series is a chance to introduce the premise of the series and the characters playing it out on a weekly basis, hopefully. It gives the network and showrunners an opportunity to see what works and what doesn't. In some cases, it results in changes to the characters in the show — Elaine wasn't in the pilot of Seinfeld , but Lee Garlington 's one-and-done Claire was — and, in some rare cases, the premise itself is changed outright in the series' second episode. Such was the case with Sex and the City , whose pilot saw Carrie ( Sarah Jessica Parker ) living in a small, messy studio apartment , and its four lead characters wearing dark colors.
