A United Airlines flight bound for Tokyo had to make an unexpected return to Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia after facing an engine failure shortly after takeoff, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The incident involved Flight 803, a Boeing 777-200 aircraft. The FAA announced it will be investigating this occurrence. United Airlines communicated to passengers on its website, stating, "We apologize for unexpectedly returning to Washington Dulles Airport. Our maintenance team needs to service a technical issue on your aircraft before we can depart again. We appreciate your patience, and we'll keep you updated as we get more information."

Efforts to contact an airline spokesperson for further comments have so far been unsuccessful.
