Multiple people have been shot in the area of Brown University in Rhode Island, police said.

The Ivy League university issued an alert on Saturday warning students of an “active shooter” near its Barus and Holley engineering building.

“Lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice,” the notice said.

The university also warned of “shots fired near Governor street”.

Providence Police urged shelter in place or avoid the area until further notice.

An update posted on the university’s website at 5:27pm local time (10:27pm GMT) said: “Police do not have a suspect in custody and continue to search for suspect(s).”
