Sinclaire Johnson broke the American record for the road mile this morning at the Kalakaua Merrie Mile in Waikiki.
Johnson’s time of 4 minutes, 21.66 seconds eclipsed the former U.S. standard of 4:23.98 set by Krissy Gear in April at the Grand Blue Mile in Des Moines, Iowa.
Johnson was the first to finish from an incredibly strong field of 20 world-class middle distance runners, competing in a chase format where the women’s division racers had a head start on the men.
Nikki Hiltz, who won this event last year, was second in 4:24.50, and Josh Hoey was third, and the first man to finish, in 3;54.77.
Three-time Hawaii state cross country champion Ka‘eo Kruse won the men’s citizens’ race in 4:17.21. Holly Parker of Great Britain won the women’s division in 4:46.25.
