PROVIDENCE, R.I. —
At least two people were killed and eight others injured in a shooting Saturday at Brown University .
Shortly after reports of the shooting , the university said a suspect was in custody, but later retracted that statement. At this time, the shooter is at large.
What we know
The shooting happened just after 4 p.m. at the Barus & Holley building, which houses the School of Engineering and the Physics Department, where students were gathering for their exams.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that two people died and eight others were in critical but stable condition at local hospitals.
Officials said they are searching for a man, dressed in black, who was last seen exiting the building on the Hope Street side.
