ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

The ABQ Biopark is facing another tragedy.

The park announced yesterday the death of another animal, a 50-year-old African spurred tortoise.

The tortoise, named Sergeant Salty, was a guest favorite for the last 24 years.

According to the park, he was one of the largest individuals of his species in human care, weighing 225 pounds.

The Biopark says that the tortoise developed a leg infection, then necrosis of the bone. After surgery to remove the limbs, vets discovered more complications and health issues, so they euthanized him.

This animal death comes after the most recent death of Moe, the Hippo, back in November 2025.
