Two people were killed and eight others critically wounded after a gunman opened fire inside Brown University’s engineering and physics building early on Sunday, triggering a full campus lockdown as the attacker fled. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said the eight injured victims were in “critical but stable" condition, while students across the Ivy League campus were urged to shelter in place.
The shooting occurred inside the Barus and Holley building, where multiple exams were scheduled at the time. Brown issued an emergency alert at 4:22 pm, warning of an “active shooter" and instructing students to lock doors, silence phones and remain hidden. Local media reported clothing and blood on the sidewalk as police, federal agents and emergency responders flooded the scene.
