MOORHEAD — Early in the third period, a scrum between Moorhead and Holy Family broke out behind the Fire’s net.
It was one of the various dustups between the two teams unlikely to exchange Christmas cards. The hard-nosed style of play was a must for the Spuds to keep top-ranked Holy Family in check Saturday evening.
“We play better when we play a little bit on the edge physically,” said Spuds head coach Ryan Kraft.
Despite the heightened physical presence, the Fire scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Spuds 3-1 in Minnesota Class 2A girls hockey at Moorhead Sports Center.
Holy Family entered the game with a nine-game winning streak to sit atop the coaches poll. Despite the loss, Moorhead said the game served as a quality teaching moment.
