PROVIDENCE, R.I. —
Mayor Brett Smiley of Providence, Rhode Island, announced Saturday night that two people were killed and eight others were seriously injured inside a Brown University building.
The eight wounded individuals are being treated at Rhode Island Hospital, the mayor said.
"Sadly, today is a day that the city of Providence and the state of Rhode Island prayed would never come," Smiley said.
In his remarks, Smiley explained the incident was initially reported to 911 at approximately 4:05 p.m. It happened inside the Barus & Holley engineering building, where exams were scheduled.
"We do not have a shooter in custody at this time," Smiley said. "There is a shelter in place in effect for the greater Brown University area."
