A 43-year-old Perth Amboy woman was killed after a van slammed head-on into a dump truck and burst into flames in Jackson on Friday, Dec. 12, police said.
The victim was identified as Evelin Villanueva-Detejeda, 43, according to the Jackson Township Police Department.
The crash happened at approximately 2:01 p.m. on Toms River Road (Route 571) near Osprey Place, when a van traveling southbound crossed the double yellow line into the northbound lane, police said. The dump truck attempted to brake but was unable to avoid the collision, police said.
The driver of the van was entrapped and unresponsive, police said. Officers attempted to rescue the driver after observing the vehicles had caught fire, but were forced to stop when they became engulfed in fames, police said.
The Cassville Fire Department arrived and extinguished the fire, police said. After the fire was put out, Villanueva-Detejeda was pronounced dead.
The driver of the dump truck was not injured in the crash, police said. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
