The New York Yankees have not made a big splash in free agency yet, but on Friday signed Ernesto Martinez Jr. to a minor league deal, according to MLB insider Francys Romero .
Martinez spent the last eight years in the minor leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers, but was close to making his debut last season. The 26-year-old has played in the outfield as well, but stuck to first base and designated hitter last season in Triple-A.
Martinez has not made his debut yet, but he had a strong spring training this year and is close to making his big league debut. He had an .850 OPS in spring training for the Brewers, but between Rhys Hoskins, Jake Bauers and Andrew Vaughn, he was never able to get a crack in the big leagues.
