President Donald Trump said the U.S. will retaliate after three U.S. military personnel — two Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter — were killed by a suspected Islamic State attacker.

The U.S. military said the attacker targeted a convoy of American and Syrian forces.

Three other U.S. soldiers were wounded, the U.S. military's Central Command said.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds announced that the two soldiers who were killed were members of the Iowa National Guard.

The attack comes as the U.S. and Syria’s new government, led by interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa, are looking at closer relations more than a year after rebels toppled Bashar al-Assad, who became known as one of the world's most brutal despots.
