One project is firmly cementing its reputation as the UK's priciest infrastructure project. High Speed 2 (HS2) was recently described by loveMONEY.com as the most expensive megaproject in the UK. Earlier this year, a Government scrutiny committee published a report warning that the total programme costs could approach £80 billion.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) highlighted what it called a "litany of failures and unheeded warnings", noting that mismanagement has "likely wasted billions of pounds of taxpayer money." In November 2023, the Department estimated the budget to be between £45 billion and £54 billion, while HS2 Ltd’s figures in June 2024 put the range between £54 billion and £66 billion.
