Shocking scenes are emerging from Sydney, Australia, after a horrifying mass shooting on Bondi Beach.

Gunfire was heard on Sunday evening just before 7 p.m. local time, with witnesses telling the Daily Mail that they saw two men exit a vehicle close to the waterfront and begin firing on beachgoers.

Multiple people have been killed, according to ABC News, though officials have yet to comment on the exact number of injured or dead.

NSW Police have confirmed, however, that two people are in custody after the shooting at the world-famous beach.

Bondi is an area of the city with a large Jewish population, and Sunday marks the first day of the Jewish Hanukkah festival.

Many Jewish Australians were gathered at the beach for a “Chanukah by the Sea” event, which began at 5 p.m.
