In our polarized society, it is always news when a Democrat and a Republican come together in common cause (“Shapiro talks of national ‘crisis’ around political violence in Washington panel,” Dec. 10). That is what took place this week when Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Utah Gov. Spencer Cox addressed a group in Washington, D.C., on the vital issues of political violence and civility.

Both of these men saw horror up close in recent months. Shapiro, his family and houseguests were the targets of an assassination attempt by an arsonist and Cox leads the state in which right-wing firebrand and leader Charlie Kirk was slain.

It would be gratifying if we could believe that these two selfless and good men would cause action to be taken on both sides of the aisle to tone down the rhetoric
