In my tradition, we’re told to love our enemies - which is a pretty wacky thing to believe. It’s absurd, really. One might say that it’s nigh impossible. Having an enemy at all means there is hatred and resentment between you and another. How do we love our enemies?

We often think that, in order to do something hard, we need to start with the hard thing. That’s not the case, not here and not elsewhere. We don’t start to try and love our enemies by loving them. We start by believing that peace is possible at all. In a way, that’s almost harder than loving our enemies, but it’s an important place to start.
