Ireceived an email this week that stopped me in my tracks. A mother wrote to tell me that her daughter’s Grade 11 history class had used one of my columns on land rights as the basis for a classroom debate. The teacher read my column aloud, then stepped back. No lecture, no guiding the students toward an “approved” opinion, no speech about what they were supposed to think. He simply opened the door and let young Canadians discuss an issue that many adults are afraid to touch.
That is remarkable. It should not be rare, but in today’s climate, it is. A high school teacher created a space for honest dialogue on one of the most complicated and important questions in our country. He trusted his students enough to let them think for themselves.
