I've covered Indiana politics for almost a decade and can usually predict how a vote is going to turn out.

But this past week, as I holed up in the IndyStar's press "shack" in the Statehouse basement waiting for the redistricting fight to unfold, I could only guess.

On Thursday, the Republican-dominated Senate voted down Trump's plea for the state to redraw its congressional map. The one approved by the House would have given Republicans the advantage in every district across the state, splitting Indianapolis into four districts in the process.

Perhaps the most surprising part of the vote was the margin : More than half of Senate Republicans broke with Trump and joined Democrats in rejecting the mid-decade redistricting bill.
