5 of the 16 illegal coke plants were demolished in 2023.

The East Jaintia Hills district administration has demolished all 11 remaining unauthorised coke plants in the district in compliance with the directions of the High Court of Meghalaya, marking a decisive enforcement push against environmental violations.

Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills, Shivansh Awasthi said that the action was carried out by a joint team comprising officials from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board and the Police Department, under the supervision of Sub-Divisional Officer Manish Kumar, IAS.

DC Awasthi said that a total of 16 coke plants were identified in the district for operating without mandatory authorisation as prescribed under government norms. 5 of these units had been demolished earlier
