On Sunday, Brown University officials cancelled all classes and exams for the remainder of the fall semester and said students were free to leave campus — a day after a deadly shooting killed two people and left nine injured.

The cancellations are for undergraduate and graduate student programs and include any papers and projects.

Those who remained on campus would have access to services and support, according to a statement by Provost Francis Doyle .

“At this time, it is essential that we focus our efforts on providing care and support to the members of our community as we grapple with the sorrow, fear and anxiety that is impacting all of us right now,” Doyle wrote.

“We know there will be many academic concerns about the implications of not holding classes and exams as scheduled.
