India on Sunday firmly rejected Bangladesh’s claim that Indian territory was being used for activities hostile to Dhaka, responding hours after the Bangladeshi foreign ministry summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma over statements made by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India.

“The Government of India categorically rejects the assertions made by the interim government of Bangladesh,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement, reacting to a press note issued by Dhaka earlier in the day.

New Delhi asserted that it has never allowed its territory to be used for activities detrimental to the interests of “the friendly people of Bangladesh” and reiterated its support for free, fair, inclusive and credible elections in the neighbouring country.
