Dan Burn was taken to hospital after suffering a rib injury during Newcastle's defeat to Sunderland, Eddie Howe has confirmed.

The defender was forced off in the first half during the 1-0 loss at the Stadium of Light on Sunday night after a collision with Black Cats defender Nordi Mukiele.

Burn received treatment on the pitch and was then replaced by Fabian Schar during the closing stages of the opening 45 minutes of the derby.

Howe has now provided an update on Burn's condition after he was taken to hospital with breathing difficulties.
