Khushbu Patel, of Frenchtown, was taking a final exam in her Brown University dorm room when she began receiving alerts about the Saturday afternoon shooting on campus that left two people dead and nine others injured.

Patel, 20, shut off her lights, barricaded the door and locked herself in the bathroom of her dorm room, where she spent hours grappling with fear and listening intently for the sound of gunshots.

“I was just listening for any and every sound possible, that was all my mind was able to focus on,” she said.

The shooting took place in the engineering building at the Ivy League school in Providence during final exams, forcing students into a campus-wide lockdown. On Sunday morning, Rhode Island police announced they had a person of interest in custody .
