1923: Australian politician Lindsay Thompson was born in Warburton. He served on the Legislative Council from 1955 to 1970, the Legislative Assembly from 1970 to 1982, and was the 40th Governor of Victoria from 1981 to 1982. On Australia Day 1990, he was awarded the Order of the Order of Australia for "services to government, politics and the Victorian Parliament".


1940: Australian immunologist Peter Doherty was born in Brisbane. Doherty's research focused on the immune system. 1996 Received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with Rolf M. Zinkernagel for discovering how T cells bind to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins to recognize their target antigens. In 1997 he was named Australian Person of the Year.


1953: Britain conducted its first atomic test on the Australian continent. The test, known as Operation Totem, involved testing of a 10-kiloton atomic bomb at Emu Field in the Great Victoria Desert of South Australia. The radioactive cloud from the explosion did not dissipate as expected and drifted northeast across the Australian continent. An obelisk still stands at the site as a warning.


1970: One of the West Gate Bridge bridges in Melbourne collapsed, plunging 50 meters below. Killing 35 construction workers. The accident had a significant impact on workplace safety laws in Australia. After the accident, workers gained a greater voice in workplace safety committees, empowering them to challenge the judgment and actions of their superiors regarding potentially dangerous behavior in the workplace.


2020: A Melbourne father charged with child murder after shaking his infant son to death has been sentenced to up to nine years in prison. The infant died from injuries such as intracranial hemorrhage and anoxic brain injury, which were associated with violent shaking and hitting hard surfaces. The reason was that the father acted inappropriately on the baby while he was drunk.
